Chuchotage or Whispered interepreting

Whispered interpreting? This is also an option for the translation of a speech or conversation

More about whispered interpreting

This type of interpreting is also sometimes referred to as chuchotage. This word comes from French and it means “whispering”. So, obviously, the point is that the interpreter whispers. He or she sits right next to the listener and quietly interprets what the speaker is saying.

Whispered interpreting, in essence, is a form of simultaneous interpreting. The interpreter whispers the translation into the ear of one or two meeting participants, rather than working from a soundproof booth via earphones. For reasonably long events, one interpreter is usually enough; for larger projects, interpreters rotate to ensure that they can fully concentrate on their work.

And now an important question: For which occasions is whispered interpreting suitable?

It is best in rather small meetings involving just a few people. The main advantage is in the cost, as you avoid paying for the interpreting equipment. Our clients appreciate whispered interpreting in training sessions, presentations or workshops. Other occasions include public appearances, for example in court proceedings, during criminal proceedings, or in dealing with authorities or the police. Also in hospitals. Or perhaps even in cinemas and theatres.

What if this sounds good but you are not sure if whispered interpreting is right for you? Then there is another alternativesimultaneous interpreting using a whispering set, where the interpreter has a microphone and listeners use headsets. This is, in a way, something between whispered and simultaneous interpreting. For example, a whispering set would be perfect for a small group of foreigners who are being guided through a factory hall. And you can be sure that everyone will understand each other.

FAQ – What do you most often wish to know?

We will appreciate it if you call us one or two weeks before the event.

Everything that goes with interpreting: the interpreter’s preparation, the transport, the interpreting process, and interpreting equipment, if needed.

A set of various specialised audio devices used for simultaneous interpreting, including headphones, microphones, soundproof booths, etc.

We provide interpreting as a turnkey service and so if interpreting equipment is needed, we will provide it.

Unlike simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting is performed in sequences. The speaker dictates a certain part of their speech and pauses momentarily while the interpreter translates the relevant part.

Consecutive interpreting is suitable in situations in which the speaker knows they will be able to make pauses during their speech. Typical scenarios include business meetings, presentations, public speeches, etc.

Unlike consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting occurs in real time, without any pauses, while the speaker is talking. It is suitable in situations in which the speakers know they won’t be making pauses. This is typically the case at conferences and whenever it is necessary to interpret into several languages at once. Usually, this requires the installation of interpreting equipment.

Simultaneous interpreting is done in real time, so the interpreters need to adapt to the tempo of the original speakers. It is an extremely demanding job that requires interpreters to work in pairs, taking turns and switching approximately every 20 minutes.
