Pre-press proofing is carried out for documents intended for publication, particularly in printed form. It involves a formal linguistic and visual check of the text after the graphic layout has been finalised — typically in a PDF exported from professional desktop publishing software.

However, pre-press proofing is increasingly used in digital contexts as well, especially for translated websites and e-shops. In this case, the goal is not only to ensure linguistic accuracy, but also to verify that the translation works properly on the live site: from formatting and text display, through the localisation of interface elements, to checking links, checkout processes or automated emails.
